Many thanks to all the people who express appreciation for the photo under this long description… on March 14 it was on Explore, at place #471.
But really that was the uglier version!

For this photo (the one above) I used the same SMC Pentax-M 50/1.7, but this time at f:22. The exposure time, with the same light, was 1/2 second for this one, and 1/60 second for the previous one. Of course the camera was steadily fixed on my Manfrotto tripod, and the mirror was lift before the shot.
If you compare the two photos, here everything is in focus, and the fake hairs on the stem are clearly visible.
You can imagine which of the two is my preferred one!
And now I can complete my tutorial about the depth of field. I must study a CSS hack to place these two photos side by side.

Sorry if I cheat a bit… but my intention was to demonstrate that if you can make a good thing, you can always make a better thing.
This is the first rule I teach to all my students. And the second is to be hyperpicky while evaluating our own works.
Quality is never in excess! To be satisfied of the first acceptable result, even if it can look good, is a way to surrend to laziness and lower the quality threshold.

For who is interested into a deeper discourse about quality, I suggest the reading of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig (more on Wikipedia). BTW, the initial quote of Plato’s Phaedrus you’ll find in this book is not literal, even if it is better than the original, IMHO. Thanks to Dora for the help in the translation from Greek!
